May is National Heritage Month and with the theme “VICTORY AND HUMANITY: Upholding Filipino Heritage and Identity,” we highlight the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan (27 April 2021) and the 500th anniversary of the Philippine part in the first circumnavigation of the world (16 March – 28 October 2021).

As people, we should uphold, strengthen, and advocate for public awareness, conservation, and promotion of our Filipino culture, heritage, and identity, especially now, in a time of crisis and virtual existence.

The Covid pandemic made us do a lot of things differently. From the way we work to our daily activities, it has affected us in more ways than we ever imagined. As a person who enjoyed staying in, it did not feel like there was much of a difference. At least, that is what I told myself. As each day passed, I thought,  this isn’t so bad . Until a week turned into a month, and the month turned into three, and staying indoors with only my family to talk to really ate away at my mental health. Full disclosure, I am diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder 2, and I am not ashamed of it. Having a mental illness in the time of pandemic was a real challenge for me. It was the sort of physical warmth that you felt whenever you drank a cup of hot cocoa on a cold December night amongst friends and loved ones. It was sweet, and it felt like home. I mean, not that I would know. I never really liked hot cocoa. I’ve always liked the taste of black coffee more. It’s strong and straight to the point. That is what home feels like to me, but when she’s wrapped around my arms and when her back touches my chest, I question myself if black coffee is really what I want my home to feel like.
